Sarah Bush

I have been practising in family law for over 20 years. I am committed to working with my clients to find solutions to their legal problems, whether by negotiation or court proceedings. I am experienced in all areas of family law including; relationship property, spousal maintenance, care of children and domestic violence. I was the first lawyer in New Zealand to successfully argue an economic disparity case for my client.

I am a trained mediator and I have conducted a large number of family mediations.

My Approach
I will give you direct and honest advice in plain language. I will ensure you understand your legal rights and entitlements and how these can be achieved.

I shall be responsive to your enquiries. I aim to return calls and emails promptly – I know it can be frustrating trying to get hold of lawyers!

I will ensure that your matter is advanced by regularly communicating with other lawyers or the court, so that your matter does not drag on unnecessarily.

I will try to negotiate a resolution to your problem by agreement, as this is often the most cost-efficient way to resolve a problem. However, if an agreement is not possible then I will vigorously promote your case in court.

I understand that separations are emotional and difficult. This can sometimes make it challenging for clients to have the necessary emotional stamina to engage with a lawyer and negotiate with their ex-spouse or partner. I will endeavour to move at your pace.

Relationship Property
I work for a range of clients, from all sectors of society, including those recognised as being high-value clients. I specialise in complicated matters involving family trusts and companies.

I am methodical and thorough and I will ensure you have a good understanding of your legal entitlement, the law and the assets and liabilities available for division.

Care of Children
In an ideal world, following a separation, parents would readily reach agreement on the care arrangements for their children. Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world.

I will help you try to negotiate acceptable care arrangements by agreement. If that is not possible, then I will represent and promote your position in court.

My Background
I have practised in family and employment law for over 20 years. I spent 5 years as a staff solicitor before moving to become a partner in a large suburban law practice with 3 locations.

I have delivered a number of presentations in family law including the Auckland District Law Society Family Law Conference 2020 on the topic of relationship property. I have been a contributing writer to a leading professional textbook on domestic violence and have given presentations on care of children law to social workers, teachers and other similar professions.

I am a member of the Family Law Section, Auckland District Law Society, New Zealand Law Society and the NZ Bar Association.
